Środa Popielcowa kończy karnawał, to tzw. święto ruchome. Obchodzone jest w kościele katolickim w różnych terminach. Podczas soboru nicejskiego została przyjęta reguła, określająca czas rozpoczęcia Wielkanocy – ma ona przypadać w pierwszą niedzielę po wiosennej pełni księżyca i tym samym określa datę Środy Popielcowej. 

Środa Popielcowa – symbolika

Popielec to dzień, w którym w kościele katolickim sprawowane są charakterystyczne obrzędy. Jednym z nich jest posypywanie głów wiernych popiołem. Tradycja ta jest bardzo stara, datowana na VIII wiek. Natomiast papież Urban II ustanowił ją jako obowiązującą. Posypywanie głów popiołem ma symboliczne znaczenie, jest aktem pokuty i przypomnieniem o konieczności duchowego przygotowania się na zmartwychwstanie Jezusa Chrystusa. Popiół ma nam uświadomić, że to, co materialne przemija, dlatego należy skupić się na tym, co najważniejsze dla ducha. Księża do tego obrzędu wykorzystują popiół pochodzący z palm poświęconych w Niedzielę Palmową w roku ubiegłym.

Zwyczaje w Środę Popielcową: 

• obrzęd posypania głów popiołem po homilii,
• wymawianie symbolicznych słów: „Nawracajcie się i wierzcie w Ewangelię^” lub „Pamiętaj, że jesteś prochem i w proch się obrócisz”,
• wielkopostne kazanie,
• pieśni pasyjne oraz pokutne,
• przypomnienie wiernym o czterdziestodniowym okresie postu,
• wstrzemięźliwość od potraw mięsnych,
• post ścisły (trzy posiłki, dwa lekkie oraz jeden sycący).  

Kiedy jest Środa Popielcowa w 2023 roku?

Tym razem Wielkanoc obchodzimy wcześniej niż w zeszłym roku. Środa Popielcowa wypada na 40 dni przed Wielkanocą, czyli 22 lutego. To symboliczne rozpoczęcie Wielkiego Postu. Niedziela Wielkanocna w tym roku rozpocznie się 9 kwietnia.

Czy w Środę Popielcową idziemy do pracy?

Popielec nie jest dniem wolnym od pracy, ani od szkoły. Jednak wierni z całego kraju uczestniczą w mszach wieczornych, by w ten sposób rozpocząć czas Wielkiego Postu.

Ten czas ma być przygotowaniem do duchowego uczestnictwa w Misterium Paschalnym związanym ze śmiercią, zmartwychwstaniem, wniebowstąpieniem Jezusa i zesłaniem Ducha Świętego na Apostołów. Wiąże się z przeżywaniem najważniejszych świąt chrześcijańskich – świąt Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego. Okres ten jest poprzedzony zadumą i refleksją. W trakcie postu nie wolno uczestniczyć w hucznych zabawach i imprezach. Trwa on dokładnie 40 dni, tyle samo, ile Jezus spędził, poszcząc samotnie na pustyni.

Środa Popielcowa kończy karnawał, to tzw. święto ruchome. Obchodzone jest w kościele katolickim w różnych terminach. Podczas soboru nicejskiego została przyjęta reguła, określająca czas rozpoczęcia Wielkanocy – ma ona przypadać w pierwszą niedzielę po wiosennej pełni księżyca i tym samym określa datę Środy Popielcowej. 

Środa Popielcowa – symbolika

Popielec to dzień, w którym w kościele katolickim sprawowane są charakterystyczne obrzędy. Jednym z nich jest posypywanie głów wiernych popiołem. Tradycja ta jest bardzo stara, datowana na VIII wiek. Natomiast papież Urban II ustanowił ją jako obowiązującą. Posypywanie głów popiołem ma symboliczne znaczenie, jest aktem pokuty i przypomnieniem o konieczności duchowego przygotowania się na zmartwychwstanie Jezusa Chrystusa. Popiół ma nam uświadomić, że to, co materialne przemija, dlatego należy skupić się na tym, co najważniejsze dla ducha. Księża do tego obrzędu wykorzystują popiół pochodzący z palm poświęconych w Niedzielę Palmową w roku ubiegłym.

Zwyczaje w Środę Popielcową: 

• obrzęd posypania głów popiołem po homilii,
• wymawianie symbolicznych słów: „Nawracajcie się i wierzcie w Ewangelię^” lub „Pamiętaj, że jesteś prochem i w proch się obrócisz”,
• wielkopostne kazanie,
• pieśni pasyjne oraz pokutne,
• przypomnienie wiernym o czterdziestodniowym okresie postu,
• wstrzemięźliwość od potraw mięsnych,
• post ścisły (trzy posiłki, dwa lekkie oraz jeden sycący).  

Kiedy jest Środa Popielcowa w 2023 roku?

Tym razem Wielkanoc obchodzimy wcześniej niż w zeszłym roku. Środa Popielcowa wypada na 40 dni przed Wielkanocą, czyli 22 lutego. To symboliczne rozpoczęcie Wielkiego Postu. Niedziela Wielkanocna w tym roku rozpocznie się 9 kwietnia.
